The problem is that most people in the world are using another messenger of some other shape or description and changing now means that no one else is using this new one.

I know that in order for it to get popular people have to sign up to it but that's a long road away to global domination.

I don't use Facebook or Messenger anymore I just use WhatsApp.

I hear ya. I only use Signal, atm.
