RedHat announced it will stop all support for CentOS at the end of 2021. They are migrating to a streamed version and everyone is pissed off! :bnghd

However, Cloud Linux and others are forking it since it is open source...

I just setup another Centos 8 server the other day....
This one also might be an easy one to move to https://linux.oracle.com/switch/centos/

Otherwise, going to have to learn a new distro.

Thanks for the info! :) I planned on doing some research to see who was going to fork it and make a list to help people...many will need it.

I have a very small hosting business and the dedicated server I have uses CentOS as well and the few VPS servers on it. But the support will last until the end of next year so we've got time to sort out the options. I'm just glad it's not something immediate.

I wasn't liking how things were going with CentOS 8. Seemed like a lot of bugs and lagging on the updates so I held off on installing it and stayed with v7, atm cause it's more stable.

Yeah this is sad, it didn't take IBM long to start influencing Red Hat.
I don't think it will be long until IBM forces Red Hat to start abandoning other open source projects.

Rocky Linux seems promising it was started by one of the original founders of CentOS

Haven't heard of Rocky Linux until now. I've been thinking of playing with linux lately. I used to play with various versions since I have multiple hdd's. But I've been so busy with  the hosting and Crip Zone themes that I haven't had time. :(

I had no idea of this. I thought they were just stopping support for ver. 6 That sucks. I like Centos.

Version 8 is EOL next year version 7 is still EOL in 2024. There are a lot of annoyed people that upgraded to version 8 thinking they will have longer support.

If you update to version 7 You should still have support to 2024, after that hopefully a new distro is stable enough to upgrade to.

A lot of hosting providers will also have to wait to see what cPanel will do. I don't think they support any non RPM based Linux Distributions.

That's sounds like the best idea for sure.

I'll bet there is. What happened for them to do that. It should be the other way around, lol.

Yes, you are correct. I noticed this after my post but haven't got around to updating it until now.

cPanel has not supported other versions in the past but plan to support Ubuntu or Debian versions in the future I just saw in a posting there yesterday. I'm not sure if they will support Oracle's or Cloud Linux's versions as of yet. We'll have to wait and see.

I'm glad I switched to Plesk years ago. My server is happily running on Ubuntu  8)

I've played with Plesk for a bit months ago but had a few problems with it and eventually gave it up because I was too busy then. I may go back to it, tho. I did manage to get a site running on it.

Not sure how this will play out because you will still need to switch OS systems for your server. :bnghd

My VPS is CENTOS 7.9

Skhilled

Mine too. We'll need to change it to another OS eventually but not sure how or what at this point. cPanel says it will be supporting Ubuntu finally.

cPanel v102 is now out and supports Ubuntu.
