Ok, so the other day my computer lost a gb of ram. I didn't have much to begin with so this made it slow. Now, just today I went and picked up 2 more gb's. This gives me 7gb's in total. My computer at bootup only counts 5gb. This is the same in Windows. I have tried going into msconfig and the protection area of the control panel and changing things but to no avail. I am thinking the computer needs a bois update to count all ram. I have also been in there (bios) and can not find any settings that pertain to ram. Is it a bios update I am lookin at here. :hwhat

What version of windows are you running, and is 32bit, or 64bit?

have you tried this? https://www.cpuid.com/softwares/cpu-z.html

Quote from: undefinedCPU-Z is a freeware that gathers information on some of the main devices of your system :
  • Processor name and number, codename, process, package, cache levels.
  • Mainboard and chipset.
  • Memory type, size, timings, and module specifications (SPD).
  • Real time measurement of each core's internal frequency, memory frequency.

Also my be worth a look at this https://appuals.com/windows-10-wont-use-full-ram/

I have cpu-z installed and I have tried all that is in that article. This leads me to believe my bios needs flashing. Which I can do later tonight maybe....maybe, lol. If ya get that wrong there is no coming back.

How old is your bloody computer that it only has that much RAM? Seriously mate ? What the ?!

Not sure how it's organised on your mobo but maybe one of the memory channels is buggered?

Way to check would be just use one stick. Put it in first channel. Start up and see if recognised as what it is. Then try the next channel and so on.

It's a Hp that I put back together. It's not the biggest thing around but it does the job real nice. Just lookin for another graphics card so I can play more online games. It has to be more than 5 years old anyway.

All the memory channels or slots are fine as they are all full. Multiple sticks have been in them in the last 24 hours, lol. I'm sure the bios needs an update.

Did you try only the new ram just to see if it works?

Bigguy

Yes I did and then a combination of about 5 different sticks. So I know I have 7gb installed. The system reads 5. I have looked in bios to turn things off/on like memory mapping and video card. I have tried the various fixes on the net for this. Still nothing. I probably will try to flash the bios. It's only been a few years since I did it, lol. It could not have changed that much, lol. Just the two new sticks of ram I got post as 4gb, which is what they are. I had a 2gb stick here and a few 1gb's

Are the sticks all the same size ram, I think it will only see them if they are all the same size.

3 are 2gb sticks and one is a 1 gb. If I take the one out and leave the 3 2gb still all it sees is 5 gb.

To clarify -
1a. How much RAM did you have in it originally? (sticks and GB, breakdown)

1b. At that time how much was the compuyter reporting that it had installed?

2. You added RAM and with a total of 7GB (3x2GB + 1x1GB), the computer reported as 5 GB. Correct?

3. You remove 1GB leaving 6GB (3 x 2GB), the computer reported as 5 GB. Correct?

4. Has your system ever reported a RAM total OTHER THAN 5GB ?

5a. Please remove some sticks - keep just 2 x 2GB sticks. Does it now show as 4GB ?

5b. Try the same with 1 x 1GB, if you can.

1b) 5gb
2) yes
3)yes
4)no
5a)yes
5b) tried

Must be the bios.
